The Christmas Truce by Carol Ann Duffy

You may already know that I am a fan of Carol Ann Duffy having seen her this year reading from her new anthology The Bees at Wimbledon Bookfest and being rather starstruck when she signed my book for me.

An early Christmas present for me from the dashing historian was her new poem entitled The Christmas Truce, illustrated by David Roberts. The outline of the book doesn’t really need explaining as her poetry retells the wonderful moment when ceasefires spread across the Western Front on Christmas Day 1914.

Carol Ann Duffy’s short stanzas are tenderly coupled with David’s endearing illustrations to make a really unique partnership. The book itself is tiny which makes it even more remarkable that such a landmark occasion can be summed up within its pages, yet as ever, Carol Ann Duffy’s words are so concisely chosen so as to keep true to the story and leave it in it’s rightful context.

This book would make a really lovely Christmas present for anyone over the age of 9 as all ages can appreciate the miraculous Christmas of 1914.
